Presentation of the planned major investment in a CO₂ capture facility

The Dyckerhoff cement plant in Deuna, located in the Eichsfeld region of Thuringia, recently welcomed another prominent visitor. The newly elected Member of the Bundestag for Thuringia, David Gregosz, visited the plant to learn firsthand about the cement industry and the steps being taken toward decarbonization.

At the center of the meeting was the presentation of a planned investment of more than €350 million in the construction of a CO₂ capture facility at the Deuna plant. As currently envisioned, this facility will make it possible to capture CO₂ emissions directly from the cement production process on a large scale starting in 2029, enabling the production of net zero-emission cement ("Net-Zero Cement"). Once completed, the Dyckerhoff Deuna plant will be one of the first in Germany able to produce and supply Net-Zero Cement.

During a tour of the plant, Deuna Plant Manager Dr. Thomas Günther explained the technical and logistical challenges involved in realizing this pioneering project. Among other topics, the tour highlighted the construction site for the future facility and the plant’s already well-developed rail connection. This will allow Net-Zero Cement to be shipped to customers in even more distant regions, while also providing the necessary logistical infrastructure for transporting the captured CO₂.

Additionally, the hosts took the opportunity to point out to the Bundestag member the political framework necessary for the industry. Especially the still-pending Carbon Dioxide Storage and Transport Act (KSpTG), as well as access to funding opportunities—such as climate protection contracts—are crucial, since the major investment will only become economically viable over time through market adoption.

Dyckerhoff extends sincere thanks to Mr. Gregosz for his visit, his interest, and the engaging exchange about the challenges and opportunities of decarbonization.
