New highway bridges at the Rüsselsheim triangle

Dyckerhoff supplies concrete and cement for the major project

March 2023 marked the start of the replacement construction of the three new engineering structures at the Rüsselsheim triangle. Since the beginning of 2022, important preliminary work such as clearing and explosive ordnance detection has already been carried out to pave the way for this infrastructure project. The aim of the measure is to distribute traffic in the region more efficiently and safely by replacing the old bridges with modern, high-performance structures. The builder of the project is Autobahn GmbH des Bundes - Niederlassung West.

As part of the project, the entire area of the Rüsselsheim triangle will be redesigned. The work includes the construction of three new engineering structures, the renewal of the connecting ramps between the A60 and A67 and the construction of a new retaining wall. The drainage system will also be renewed and a settling and infiltration basin with a pump system will be built. The road embankments will be backfilled to ensure safe access to the new structures.

Dyckerhoff is supplying cement and concrete for this. Around 15,000 m³ of ZTV-Ing. concretes of quality C 30/37 to C 45/55 will be supplied for the superstructure of the bridges. These will be supplied by the Flörsheim am Main and Griesheim plants. More than 5,000 tons of CEM III/A 42.5 N-(na) and CEM III/A 32.5 N-LH-(na) cement from the Amöneburg plant were used to produce the concrete. The large-scale concreting of the bridge superstructures in October and November 2024 was particularly challenging. More than 2,000 m³ of concrete were processed in a single pour within 24 hours.

Structures 02 and 03 will be constructed at an elevated position. After the completion of the superstructures, they will be lowered by about 1 meter into their final position under live traffic. To minimize traffic disruptions and maintain traffic flow throughout the construction period, the new intersection structure and the northern ramp structure will be built to the south of the existing structures, while the southern ramp structure will be shifted to the north.

The demolition of the old bridge structures and the partial dismantling of the existing ramps will take place after the traffic has been rerouted. The main construction work should be completed by the end of 2025, meaning that the new structures are expected to be able to carry traffic efficiently and safely from 2026.

The work, which is being carried out by the construction company Bickhardt Bau SE from Kirchheim, is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
